im putting the front end back together on my truck but the hood wont fit it fits good everywhere except the front. when together and the hood is closed it looks like the front fenders are to far apart the hood fits good at the cab and along the fenders until about half way and then the gap starts to get wider on both sides. the inner fenders, radiator support, and grill all are installed,soi don't know how to get the very front of the fenders in any more than they are now,any 1947-1954 chevy truck guys out there?thanks

What you need to do is loosen the grille bolts and the upper fender to rad support bolts. Then tighten the tension on the truss rods that go from the fenders to the firewall. That is all it takes to move the fenders in.

thanks, i don't have the truss rods is there any way around them i see a lot of people don't use them, if not guess ill need to find some thanks for the help

That thing will flex and squeek like a maniac without them. And never will stay in adjustment. The drivers side of the hood usually has a gap between it and the fender. Factory flaw. It gives the truck that bit of a snarl on that side. I've fought with mine for years and never had it perfect. If the truck is subframed it is that much harder to get the sheet metal all aligned.

This is about the best I ever had mine and it wasn't that close then.


The truck was sitting on a 67 Camaro subframe in front and it was hard to get everything just so. I am sure it wasn't.

id be happy if mine fit that good, i thought getting the doors right was bad but this is worse

You have no truss rods, so of course it is going to be hard. It would be like adjusting the doors with bent hinges, it just ain't goin to work.

Get those rods and you will be surprised. As Chopt pointed out, there are other factors that could need to be addressed as well. But FIRST lets get those truss rods.

I recently sent this guy (click here) $100 for a frame. Now mind you, I havn't picked it up, but he seemed pretty trustworthy after a few phone calls and emails. I have a buddy who is going to go pick it up for me.

I found out the hard way that you have to have the doors fit perfect before you ever think about chopping one. I did chop it an run it a year before I did the suicide doors. That helped a bit.

Also make sure you have the proper support pad between the radiator support and the frame.

I restored a '47, which I drove for about 7 years & a good friend still has his '50. One thing we both found out is that you will never get the hood right (aside from a very high end resto). It's the nature of the beast. Check out all of the other trucks like yours at the shows & you'll see that none of the hoods are perfect. A lot of them have paint chipping off where the hoods touch the fenders. Go with the flow & be happy with the fact that you've done your best with in inherently flawed situation.

I'd like to add a little to already good comments.
If you don't have truss rods,use (temporary) turnbuckles from your local hardware store.they'll pull it in closer for you.I've used thicker plates at (behind)anchor points to pull more evenly.You could also consider widening hood where it gets narrower(try temp wedge inside hood sides)Like mentioned before you prob have to add shims to cradle etc., tweak it and have lotsa patience,good luck
