am installing bucket seats in my 48 plymouth special deluxe coupe. any ideas on how high these seats should be and what type of base to use or build. the car didn't come with the original front seat for comparison. <img src="confused.gif" border="0">

don,

i recently sold my '48 dodge special deluxe. it was all original. the seats on these cars are very chair-like. they sit a lot higher than buckets. i am a tall person (6'5") and i still had lots of headroom, so i wouldn't be worried about setting the buckets too high. my advice would be to experiment with different bases to get a feel for what kind of ride and view you want.

First of all make your seat selection, then mount the seats to a sheet of 3/4 plywood cut to fit inside the coupe. Then start shimming with 2x's and 1x's then door shims 'til you get where you want to be for your comfort.
Make a drawing of the proper measurements and take photos. Then execute the new seat frame in steel tubing and sheet metal. Use the original outside floor mounts to bolt your new uprights to the floor then fab up the rest to make a stable and attractive platform. Then cover the platform with carpet, upholstery and enjoy.
I love technology.

How high you install the seats is mainly personal preference. Your main concern is just to get the seats level and high enough so you can comfortably see out of the windshield. The original front seat in my '48 Chevy coupe is 18" off the floor, which was typical for the 40s and 50s. (This is the average height of most household furniture because it is easier to get up out of.) I didn't care for the seat to be that high because it felt like I was looking out of the top of the windshield.

While there's still plenty good info to be gleaned from this thread, I have a couple things I'd like to add.

1. In the six years since last been posted in, I'd hope the OP got his seat issue solved. But, like I said, late coming info is still welcome info.

2. deadbodyman, please empty your pm box, I tried to respond to your earlier pm, but it was full. That's why you haven't heard back, if you were wondering.

In a while, Chet.

Dead, to the right hand side check the little white boxes then drop down to the bottom of the list to a drop down menu labeled "selected messages", open this and select "delete" and hit go.

There's a reason for this folks, sorry for the confusion.
