I am fairly new to big blocks. I was wanting to get a 454 block w/4-bolt mains and make it into a 496 stroker. I already know that I want it carbureted, no computer control at all. I also know that I want a six speed manual transmission. What I need is several different suggestions on combos to make 600-650 hp on pump gas, not much higher because I still want to be able to use the 6 speed manual. I don't mind using a blower if I have to, but I was hoping I could make that much power without one. Any suggestions are appreciated, thanks in advance!

You can get stroker kits from Eagle and Scat that will go right in a stock case. Aluminum heads will easily make 600 hp but you can use stock heads with a fair amount of work(big valves and pocket porting) Watch the compression and use a hydraulic or solid roller.

I built this on a very tight budget and will be upgrading as I go. I run it on the street with no problems and it has plenty of get up with the original 2:73 gear in a heavy chevelle on a 3k converter. With aluminum heads and slightly bigger solid cam you will be well above 600hp.

781's with 2.19's 1.88's lots of bowl hog work. Port matched, upper port work.

This was easy build as far as cutting and grinding the block. Just a couple of places. Did have some bad luck with the aftermkt rods hitting on the inside of the piston pin boss. I narrowed rod eye. Also had a bad piston (
Somebody, somewhere had dropped it. Before I got it) and had to wait a few weeks for another run from Keith Black.

Should be right around 600 hp and 600 ft lbs based on what others like it have made.

If you were able to spend a few more dollars, I would recommend the AFR 305cc heads with the CNC ported combustion chambers. This with a setup otherwise similar to mine should be around 650 pretty easily.
