I have a opportunity to purchase a UN-assembled, claimed to be 502. This would include the block /caps, rods with mini dome pistons & steel crank. This is supposed to be a crate engine that had a lifter noise problem and was sold to a local bracket racer that lost interest. How can I confirm that this block is indeed a 502? Is $1500 a good price? I never touched a big block so I do not know what to look for...

Check/measure the bore. A 454 will be about 4.25". A 502 will be about 4.5".

A 502 Block can be a Gen V or VI-it will have "8.2" cast into the Block, and be a 4-Bolt Main Block with a one piece rear Main Seal-it may or may not have provisions for a Fuel Pump-

I have an embarrassing story to tell-I purchased what was billed as a new 502 Block off of Ebay, and it appeared to be a little rusty (from Storage was the story)-the Seller said he would have it cleaned and blasted for me, and I purchased it-when it came it was bagged, and I stuck it under my work bench for when I was ready for it-well, the time came, and I pulled it out, took it to the Machine Shop only to find that it was cracked and over bored .060-my fault completely for taking someone's word (although it was the only time I ever got burned on Ebay)-I should have checked it immediately after it arrived - lesson learned. Be careful out there-

I bought a new GM 502 Block about a Month ago, and it was about $1895.00, so if he is asking $1500.00, I think I'd pass and just buy a new one if it were me- :sweat:
