in the 55 only 265 the cam has a slot milled in the rear journal for oil feed through the cam bearings. Would it be advisable to open a channel between the two oil holes in the rear cam bearing so as to get full time oiling to the cam? I've built dozens of engines, but this is a new one on me. Old timers? Bowtie boys?

I'm not a Chevy guy but have built a few. If memory serves you can simply change out the rear cam bearing for a slotted one and then use a any one of the later or aftermarket cams. On the other hand this system worked just fine back in '55 and if you would rather, just have a flat machined in the cam you want to use and as long as you're not going to wind it to 8000 all the time it should be fine.
