I recently bought a 322 Nailhead out of a 56 Buick. It came complete with the original Dynaflow transmission. When I tried to separate the tranny from the engine, I took out all of the bell housing bolts and tried to pull the tranny back figuring it would pull the splined shaft out of the torque converter leaving the converter on the engine(as with an SBC which is all that I am familiar with) the tranny pulled back only half an inch. I also tried to unbolt the flexplate from the torque converter but I could not get at the upper bolts because something is seized and it won't turn. :pain:

I have a 59 Caddy with a hydramatic, but I bet it is like your Buick. The convertor is held to the input by a snap ring. You have to remove the T.C. cover by removing a series of nuts. Once the cover is off, you will see a snap ring holding the rest of the convertor in place.
Those old convertors were not one piece like the modern convertors.

There are three bolts holding the convertor to the flex plate.
Once you get those off the convertor cover can be removed.
Inside there is a 9/16 bolt that holds the turbines together.
If you have the bell housing bolts loose you may be able to pry the housing back far enough to remove the remaining bolts.
Ah the good old days.

Well I finally got the tranny off of the motor but I had to completely disassemble the motor because it was seized. Once I got the crank spinning I was able to get at all of the bolts holding the torque converter (14 of them!) to the motor and flexplate. Now with that problem solved I have found another one. This motor needs to be completely rebuilt. I can feel my wallet getting lighter already. Thanks again guys.
