Hello,




Just starting an engine swap in a 1961 Rambler Classic. I purchased a 1965 232 engine with an automatic. What I could use help on is guidance on securing the engine since the 232 is longer than the original 196 (cast iron). Here are my questions:
  • Should I attempt to build an engine mount to accomodate the mid-motor mounts on the 232 or should I try to somehow adapt the front of the 232 to the front cross-member like the 196?
    • I'm planning on re-using adapting the transmission mounts.
    • any patterns for a motor/frame mount available?
  • Looks like there's some kind of torsion bar between the frame and the engine on the driver's side...any need to adapt that to the 232?
  • Can I somehow adapt the push button controls to work on the 1965 automatic?
    • If so, will the 1965 Automatic bolt up to the original torque tube?
      • Looks like the 1961 and 1965 transmissions are very similar, but there's 6 bolts used on the '61 but only 4 on the 1965...perhaps i need to swap out the tail shaft casing?
      • If I can't make the 1965 transmission work, it looks like, the 232 should bolt onto the original automatic, right?
  • I think i'm ok with installing a CJ-5 water pump and pulley and moving the radiator forward, adapting other linkages, and exhaust fittings.
  • Any other hints will be appreciated.
I will be happy to post my progress for others to refer to! I've already learned a ton...these cars are kinda cool.

Your original transmission and the 1965 transmission are essentially the same but different. They are both Borg Warner automatics, and basically are the same except the transmission you need is the torque tube transmission.. The 232 should bolt to the original transmission and keep your torque tube.

As for the Motor mounts, PM Farna as he has done this mod before and his motor mounts are simple, I just can't remember exactly how he built them. He is also an AMC Guru but does not visit this forum on a regular basis.

I answered in a PM. Killer, that is a good thread, but the 232 will fit the 64-65 American without as much trouble. It had motor mounts on the suspension crossmember, and later models (66-69, and some late 65s) came with the 199/232 (same block, different stroke). It's a tight fit, and some of the info from that thread will apply. The mounts on the 61 Rambler Six are four corner -- two in front of the engine and two on the bell housing. All pre 63 Ramblers (pre 64 American) are made that way.
