My axle is leaking at the wheel. This is the rear end without an inspection plate on the differential. Any experience replacing the seal? Local shop wants $200 per wheel.

As one of the Moderators here.......let me be the first to WELCOME you here. :welcome:


You remove the wheel/tire/rim and then the brake drum.
Remove the 4 bolts that hold the axle in (to the backing plate).

Then use a axle puller and pull the axle. Then you can replace the seal. New wheel bearings are a great preventive maintenance move also.

Reverse the procedure.

Can I replace the seal without removing the bearings? I would think I would have to press the bearings off/on. If so then do I need a shop to do that?
