i recently acquired an 86 C20 with a 454 and a th400. I like to drive the truck, do not tow with it or hot rod it. I do a lot of 60-75mph driving and the 454 with 3.73 gears scream on the road at those speeds. Would a stock 700r4 hold up to my 454 if babied? I really do not get on it at all and the only plans are replacing the stock headers with a set of cheap long tubes.

Rebuilt 700R4, yes. Used 700R4, no.
Start with a 87-92 Core, these have the most factory upgrades, newer the better..
86 smogger 454 isn't exactly a powerhouse.

At least add this for insurance:700R4 transmission shift kit Transgo shift kit I would also recommend having a transmission shop set the TV cable by pressure gauge,incorrect TV pressure can destroy a 700R4 in no time flat.

I like the 200 r4 better, but i agree that if you use the 700, do the rebuild with atleast some upgrades with bigger boost valves for more clutch holding power. the tv cable has to be right or forget the switch because you'll never be happy. Your 454 maybe not the powerhouse you think, but it still delivers alot of torque.

700r4 or 200r4 is a good choise if it rebuilt and the tv linkage is correct
