700R4 ouput shaft groove question

I've got a question for the transmission experts here. Assembling my 700R4 transmission and I noticed on the output shaft there is a groove cut next to the two holes for the speedometer gear clip. Was this an intentional modification done in the past? I'm guessing it should be OK, since the gear just goes over the top of this groove.

Whenever I see innovative thinking like that, I always wonder what avant-garde solution was used in their next dilemma.

I'm picturing something like, "Hmmm. If I drill a hole in the pan...I could really keep an eye on the fluid in there."
