I have a 1983 silverado that I bought to fix up and it is a mess... first of all I would like to know what the torque converter lock up is and what it is supposed to do. 2nd does it have to be hooked up for the trans to shift right? and 3rd, if someone has a truck like this could you email me pics of the wiring at [email protected]? Thanks and I look forward to some info.

Lockup Torque converter

All stock converters slip around 200-300rpms at cruise speed etc.. The TC with a lockup clutch inside is similar to a Manual tran's clutch. Eliminates the slippage.
It doesn't have to be connected to shift right but, if it's not it may cause the trans to overheat.
Autozone's website has wiring schematics in there trouble shooting area.

thanks!

Thanks for your help! I have found some great info on here. I have had the truck for 2 years and it has been an ongoing project.
