i have a 71 chevy pu, and i was wondering how to lock the door when i get out without using the key. for some reason the door will not stay locked when it is shut. on the previous body style 60-66 i know that you push the door handle down before you shut the door and it will lock, ive tried holding the button in too. i have been looking around, and havent been able to figure it out. on these years is the key the only way to lock it????

I do believe that the key is the only way to lock those doors without installing power door locks and keyless entry. Another thing that you could do is put Bear Claw latches in. (http://www.autoloc.com/latch.html) I'm pretty sure that you can lock the door with those. Plus they are more secure, from what I read.

worthless post here, but...
just the other day i pushed down the lock on the door of our 72 camaro and shut it. IT LOCKED!! Must be the first year they started doing that, or close. it has a recessed handle so maybe in 70 but i know my chevelle (70) i had would unlock itself if you just shut it without holding in the button

Geez thats one safety feature i need on my truck ... I have pictures of me sitting with the keys locked in my truck at the Tennessee aquarium, Datona beach, Six flags over georgia, Bush gardens ... Youd think id have enough sence to buy one of those "hide a keys " by now ...
