My 1979 GMC K25 HD needs new brakes desperately, but everywhere I look I get different answers as to whether they are pressed onto the hubs or not. Some say they are not, some say all 4 corners are pressed on, and some say just the rears or the front are pressed on. Can someone enlighten me? I have a press so it's not a huge issue, but I would like to know before I dig into it so I can make adequate time to do so.

I've only worked on one of these in the past. While things were frozen a bit, a chunk of 2x4 and hand sledge took them off without a lot of strain. They are a tight slip fit but certainly not "pressed on".

Nothing is pressed on not even the front outer hub bearings.


There are like 4 diffrent sizes of brakes and calipers though.

You need to know if you have hydroboost, the gcv weight rating and your vin. This will allow for the proper calipers, rotors, drums and pads.

K/C trucks are simple that is why I like them so much. The only thing you need a press for is bearings in the manual transmission and that is about it. 95% of that truck can be rebuilt with a quality set of basic hand tools found at a estate sale or harbor freight for less then $20.

Maybe your thinking about automatic or manual hubs. The manual hubs you need to turn by hand. Which may require PRESSING IN before turning. The automatic ones have a internal spring that locks them (when they work). Both the manual and automatic are bolted to the rotor with 6 bolts. I perfer the manual.


You need to watch parts people sometimes. Make sure they are selecting the proper thing they may have been trying for a 97 3500 instead of a 79 c35 or it may have given them a 79 3500 option which will move them into the 88 to 98(ish) trucks.

I have a 87 V10. Squarebody with first year TBI and funky belt setup. I need to make sure they scroll all the way down so I do not end up with carburated or 1500 parts.
