I picked up a 94 Firebird with the 5.7 LT1...It had an upper engine fire. I'm wanting to make a drag car out of it. My questions are:

What are the main issues to look for when taking off all the computer controls, fuel injection, etc and just running a regular manifold and carb set up? Would the ignition still work with the key or would I by pass that with a push button?

Does the 4L60E tranny have a separate computer that controls it or is it the same computer that runs the engine/fuel injection, etc.

Would I need to use a different fuel pump.

Doc here, :pimp:

The starting place is get a copy of the NHRA rules..some apply to electrical systems..

If you had an upper engine fire in the engine bay, scrap the wire harness all together and start anew.You can't tell what has melted and shorted together from the heat inside the taped bundles..

You need to consider the following:
  • Where to locate the battery, front or rear?

  • Will a remote start solenoid be used?

  • Where the emergency Disconnect will be mounted?

  • Will lighting be used?

  • Will a charging system be used?
Then you need to decide Bare Bones or stock instrumentation? (scrap panel and go aftermarket, or stay stock..)

You need to consider:
  • Starting system

  • Charging system (if one is to be used)

  • Ignition System

  • engine monitoring group
This is bare bones..and minimum wire count..preferable for Strip only..Then plan your harness from there.

Thanks Matt...that's what my question was, was if the tranny needed its own computer. I've been drag racing off and on for over ten years so I'm not new to the rules and all that. My question was specifically to this car, what needs to be done to take the computer and fuel injection out.

Does anyone know about the fuel pump?

the fuel pump likely puts out 15-30 PSI, you could regulate that down to 7 PSI with a carb fuel pump regulator, to run a carburator
