I bought another Maverick Grabber today :) ...
Its going to have to sit outside for a while cause i dont have anymore room in my garage...It has some surface rust where the paint is cracked and chipped and i was wondering what i can put on it to keep it from rusting anymore until i can start work on it ?

Beings you don't have any harsh winters, I would just shoot some primer over the spots for the time being and then cover it with a tarp to keep some of the weather off of it. This should hold you just fine until you get ready to tear into it.

Just spraying primer over rust is not going to do much good at all,its like sweeping dirt under a rug.What you need to do for the time being is just buy some short of stripper for a drill or some sort of sandpaper depending on how bad the rust is.Once you get the rust spots down to the bare metal then shoot a good coat of primer on them.Im assuming that when you get around to painting the car you are going to strip it all the way down anyways.So after you spray the primer get any spray paint and cover over the primer.Primer is not meant to be a top coat it is not a sealer,thus allowing moisture to be absorbed.If the meatl is in anyway pitted at all and you dont have access to a sandblaster than you could pick up some stuff at the part store called rust converter.Its works pretty well.

Impalass is correct. Primer is porus and will absorb moisture. I would sand the spots down and cover it with some left over sealer or buy a cheap can of rustoleum to put on the area. If your going to be stripping or sanding it down later you might as well put a coat of rattle can paint on to seal it if no sealer is available. Kevin45 has a good point also, if the car has any leaks its good to put a tarp over it to keep standing water off, BUT make sure to remove the tarp at least once a week for a few hours in the sun because moisture will build up under the tarp and if you don't let it dry out you'll end up growing mushrooms on your floor boards. I'm short, kill the rust, coat the panel to seal it from the elements.

you guys are really creeping me out now. concerning this grabber: it's only a ford, so just cover it and forgettaboutit! but regarding this primer thing. i KNOW most primers are porous. except for really good red oxide. of course i know this NOW, after i painted my truck with etching primer instead of olive drab PAINT!! so i had to go back and sand off the etching primer then i resprayed red-oxide from NAPA really thick, which i have had no rust with for over 3 years in the past on my hood (those were the days). so, in other words i didn't use the industrial stregnth red oxide i've painted steel with at a sign company, which i KNOW isnt porous cause i've seen water bead up on it. but i have to ask this, with etching primer (very porous) over my napa red oxide i sprayed on with a gun, IF it starts to rust, WILL I BE ABLE TO SEE IT OR WILL IT BE UNDERNEATH THE PAINT????? AND HOW LONG CAN I WAIT TILL I PAINT IT? :D SORRY MAV, I JUST HAD TO SAY IT!!

Well let me clarify. Usually anyone that has done body work knows to sand the rust off first. What I specifically meant was to hit it with a DA or whatever then coat it with some primer. Not a lengthy process. If you was in a hurry you could even hit it with a 120 disc and an electric grinder. Shoot a coat of primer and let it go till spring. If it's something you are going to tear into next year anyhow there's no use in spending a lot of time on it anyhow righr now. The rust that's on there probably wouldn't get any worse in a few months even if you didn't do anything to it. All of this stuff that primer is porous and if you spray it on it will draw moisture and rust out worse is a bunch of crap. The pic of the Econoline that Weimer had has red oxide primer on it that was shot on the lower panels probably 15 years ago over bare metal and did not draw the moisture and rust out. What rust was on the truck was from the inside out. I've done body work ever since I was 14 and painted cars since I was 16 and was taught by my father who worked in body shops all his life, so if the calculator is correct I've been doing it for 32 years and my fathers been doing it for about 70 years. Also read Bullheimers response to the primer situation. Sorry if I didn't go into every little detail in my first response but I figured if Maverick is doing his own welding and body work on his present Maverick he would know to knock the rust off before priming. Surface rust will not kill a car in a few months anyhow and if it's holes then it's going to need cut out and fixed later.

Saying "its only a Ford" is like saying "Its only the mona lisa" or "its only a picaso" Shame on you ! :)

Actually the car is only going to be outside for a few months until tax time ... Im building a 40x40 building out back... I was just wondering if there were any new products out there that i could shoot on the car to keep it from rusting anymore ...

The first mav is coming along very well ... body work is finished ... Dropped in a fresh 5.0 HO and all i lack is a lincon rearend with disk brakes ... interior is almost complete .. just waiting on my dash pad and floor shifter to come in then its off to the paint shop ... im going with black paint and purple ghost flames ( I know that paint combo is a dime a dozen but it just looks sooooo good) I had a guy custom make a grabber hood for me using the rear brake vents out of a 95 stang as scoops in place of the stock inserts and man it looks cool !!! and hell it was cheaper than buying a glass grabber hood !!

Who said " its only a ford " ?? LOL :)

IF ALL YOU WANT TO DO IS TO STOP THE RUST ON YOUR MONA LISA I WOULD SAY JUST SPRAY ANY KIND OF PAINT OVER THE TOP OF IT, ESP. FRAME OR TRIM PAINT. BLACK HAS MORE SOLIDS IN IT SO WORKS BETTER. AS FOR YOUR FAKE HOOD I HAVE BEEN EYE BALLING THOSE SCOOP JOBBY DOO'S IN SUMMIT FOR TRUCKS, THINKING HOW THEY MIGHT COMPARE TO A GTO HOOD FOR MY TEMPEST IF I STUCK THEM ON THERE AND RE PAINTED
