My car is a dual purpose car, street and strip. For track performance i am going to run open collectors, little point running through mufflers at the track if i'm not in a special class. i don't need that extra performance that exhaust would give me on the street so i don't really need a muffler/exhaust that flows and is loud/has lots of drone. I don't see that i would enjoy trips around town without being able to hear myself think.

So i'm looking for a setup that will flow ok, and be quiet, so when i'm driving on the street i won't get hassled by the popo or rattle what few brain cells i have left out of my head.

Car is a 74 Gran Torino
Engine will be a 351W with a few goodies and Hooker competition headers so far planned for exhaust (only long tubes that will fit my car with this engine/trans combo i'm told)

I'd like an X pipe but may have to settle for an H as $$ is limited, and it will need to be fabbed to fit the car/engine/trans combo

Any preferences as to which muffler/pipe size i should use to have the least amount of drone, still a decent sound, but something more refined than raspy.

Also what problems could i be looking for as far as carb tuning goes with changing the exhaust after the header?

I would use factory style resonators between the headers and the rear axle, then a set of turbo mufflers after the axle. The longer the resonator the better, stock Dodge Neon replacements are a nice length for muscle cars. I think they are 2" or 2 1/4", don't quote me.

The resonator gets rid of the drone but retains the low rumble we all love, glasspack resonators aren't the same as the factory perforated and twisted tube type...make sure you get the right kind. I would run 2 1/4" from the header to the mufflers and then 2 1/2" tail pipes after.

There is a muffler called X-cellerator which is supposed to be more quiet then flow masters but still have that power sound, you might look into this muffler, I would stay with 2.5" because I think you mentioned in another post about building your motor up more. For what its worth I just put flow master 40 series on my Windsor and feel its too loud.

I was really reluctant to go with a 3" exhaust and hooker aero chambers on my BBC. I figured it was going to be a litlle obnoxious, but I was okay with that....Surprisingly when I incorporated an x pipe it seems to have really mellowed the tone to almost disappointingly mild! I made a home-made x out of siameseing a 180 bend (cut in half of course). the bends are only about 40 bucks with tax cdn.
