I don't think the K&N does add more power than an open velocity stack. "they" say it's supposed to smooth the airflow into a carb with nothing else on it?? I'm not so sure about that. But It's a dang good filter(Except for really fine stuff like dust) and has much better airflow than a stock paper kind. I also read somewere where they clamed that the oil that is used with the K&N is supposed to stop some of the Nitrogen in the are so more oxygen gets to the engine. I guess it could happen but only for a short time while the oil's fresh
You need to look at a dual snorkle inlet air cleaner assembly as installed on the mid-eighties 350 HO Camaro. It uses pickup tubes mounted on the core support to channel cool air back into the cleaner. This type of assembly along with a K&N filter will give you maximum performance on a street car.
The K&N air filter has been tested extensively, and if it is maintained as directed, outpaces other type of filters by quite a wide margin in terms of flow. As far as filtering ability, I have never heard that they don't filter well.
We have used them for years on dirt track sprinters, and everything else, and I have never seen evidence that they let dirt in the engine.
David Vizard has done exhaustive tests on all types of air filters and stands by the K&N as the real deal, in terms of filtering and flow.I tend to stick to his recommendations, as I feel his writings and tests are some of the most unbiased research you can read.
I also am a believer in K&N as I even use one in my '99 Sable 3.0 24V Grandpa car. As particular as I am, I would have to trust it.
The only problem with it that I have seen or heard is possible contamination of the MAF sensor, IAC motor or throttle body if the filter is cleaned and too much oil is saturated into the filter material.
i used to have a 79 elcamino and i tryed other types of air filters and the the only one i seen and felt a differance in was k&n. it will not make a differance if your car is a ****box on wheels. i seen people put them on there cars that were so worn out and then complained tthat they wont do anything. <img src="graemlins/drool.gif" border="0" alt="[drool]" />
