Does it make a difference which wire is positive and which is negative on a two wire compressor? Mine isn't marked and I can hear what sounds like the clutch engaging either way.

Is it a 110 or 220v motor ? Most motors have can schematic inside the terminal enclosure . there should be a schematic inside the regulator switch box . there should be a plate somewhere designating the electrical requirements of the motor .got pictures ?? .

I should have been more clear - it's my car's A/C compressor. Twelve volt.

Both wires are black.

If there is no continuity between either wire & a known ground , then it makes no difference.
