If you're talking about something like a Wagner airless paint sprayer, yes it will work for spraying primer on a chassis. I wouldn't use it for finish coat on anything but a backyard fence but for primer it will work. Just make sure you clean it very well after you're done. Epoxy primer will clog up any paint gun permanently if allowed to dry.
In my experience using the airless gun with thinner paints, primers, and stains etc., I get a lot of dripping out the nozzle of the gun. One solution is to keep a rag close at hand and wipe it down every couple minutes. Just be aware this can happen...it can get quite irritating.
(Maybe the newer models are better - it's been a few years since I've used my Wagner to prime a car.)
