Hello,

As you may know, pre 1969 BBC's did not have alignment dowels in the block to align the timing cover oil seal to the crank shaft. I am looking for any tips and tricks to perform this alignment, so as to avoid a leak in this location. I have heard there is a tool but I can't find one from the usual sources (Summit, Jegs, ePay). Any suggestions on how to do this right the first time?

I always just slide the damper onto the crank enough to center the seal on the cover and tighten it up....never had one leak.

Somewhere in the shop. (darned Geezer brain!) I have an old BBC harmonic balancer with the outer ring peeled off (a story in itself). That I honed .004" out of the ID. Used it many times for t-cover install when old big blocks were plentiful.

Yup, I use the damper myself. I use slow-setting RTV on the gasket just in case it takes a little time to get it on. Just finger-tight the bolts, drive the balancer on, then tighten the cover bolts.
