ok well i bought a 80 monte carlo for parts and it had a very high idle and wouldnt ever lower.

well put the engine and alternator and carb and everything into my 82 grandprix and the same thing happend.. i thought the carb was messed up so i went and bought a new q-jet... well still after 10 mins of idling it idled very high. after looking at the carb the choke was still on.

i read somwhere that there is a relay inside the alternator that comes on to give a 12+volt power to the choke when the engine is running to heat the coil up to get the butterfly all the way open..

i took the alternator up to the parts store and they did a test on it and it had 60 amps and said it was still good to use.

is it the relay in the alternator that is my problem or somthing else?

should i just replace the whole thing with a new 80 amp alternator?

The relay is not operating at all, not sending the 12 volts to the choke, and keeping the metallic strip in the choke cold, therefore keeping your choke on all the time. Check it to see if you are getting 12 volts with a meter. Most of the time, the parts store only checks to see if there is output on the alternator.

would a test light work fine or should i buy a multimeter thing?

my car i shaved the door handles and put in 40lb selionds, and added a pretty big stero. the deck is 200 watts max and would be 100watts rms or somthing and the amp in the trunk for the subs is 400watts rms and 800watts max.

500watts rms / 12 volt =41.6amps
1000watts max / 12 volts = 83.3 amps

the parts store has a 63amp(i think) and a 80 amp that they say will fit my car. theres 100 amp but supposivly it wont fit or somthing. since i got 60 amps now im gathering since i added the stero i should go with the 80 amp to help keep up.. but is it going to be big enough?

A test light should do. If the test fails, be sure to check the ground on the choke itself, that it is a good connection.

Concerning the alternator, the rating is what the alternator is capable of outputting, not what it runs at all the time. Find out what you have (12si, 10si, etc), and get the largest output you can afford.
