amp gauge wireing

I have got a 1988 mercury cougar and i have purchase new gauges for it
I have got the water temp gauge and oil pressure gauge working fine, My problem is the amp gauge.
I understand it should be wired to or between the alternator and battery wires and a good ground, The main large wire going from the alternator to the selaniod is this right way of doing it, or is there a better way
thanks

Sound like that would work. You may need to find a ground inside the dash area to complete the circuit. Just follow the wiring diagram. Of course you may want to use the ground on the ignition switch so the gage turn on and off with the ignition.

Gauge

Doc here:pimp:

Is this a Current Shunt type gauge?

If so you DO NOT apply ground to it at all (except for lighting)

It reads Current through the line (gauge) and is on the hot side of the system only.

If it's an inductive type then installation will differ...

Refer to your installation data for best type of installation.

You may want to re~consider the AMP gauge for a Voltage gauge, The volt gauge is easer to wire up, and reports about the same data, The amp gauge (Shunt type) will disable the electrical system if the shunt bar ever burns out...
