Depends on tire size and sidewall height, since this relates to how much the tire sidewall flexes over during cornering...but 1" is a pretty safe figure.
Not really all that different a clearance rquirement as the tire sidewall clearance to any sheetmetal.
On what?
What suspension?
What use?
Panhard or wattz?

More info needed.
Thanks Eric, I was thinking along the same lines 1" should be enough. A panhard bar should (better) hold them in place during cornering.
