They're good heads for making decent power, especially on "small" BBC engines like yours. Using the right cam and a matched set of gears and stall (if AT) and an engine built using them can make very good low/mid range power to get that two ton-plus truck(?) moving off the line, w/o giving away much at all on the top end.

I would use a dual plane like several that are out there, the Edelbrock RPM comes to mind. I'd use a cam w/fast ramps, having a duration @ 0.050" lift of around 240 degrees or less (if you use PB you need at least 16 inches of vacuum (brake companies recommend 18), so don't go overboard unless you want to use manual brakes or a vacuum pump), w/a 110-112 LSA and as much lift as the duration allows. The Voodoo line of cams by Lunati would be a place to start.

Go roller if you can afford to, w/the correct supporting valve train parts to match the cam. The heads already have plenty of valve in them. If no roller, there are plenty of FT cams that will fit the bill. Maybe someone will come along w/the exact part numbers for your cam; that's something I personally don't do.

What the heads are not good for at all is street racing. Take them to the track, though, and they'll rock.:mwink:

OK- I was trying to be subtle about the street race thing but since this seems to have gone right over your head, let me be blunt:

We DO NOT condone street racing here. Period.

Cobalt your post needed a smily somwhere: I caught your subtlety,:D

And cobalts right those heads will rock!

The second post with the police mentioned I had to laugh at :D I knew it was coming:nono:, because no one on hotrodders street races or puts their foot to the floor or road tests their freshly built cars on a public highways or back roads:nono: we all tow them to the track to do such illegal things!!!!:eek:even if you have to tow it 500 miles:p

 What I just wrote is a little levity so please monitors don't dump this thread!!!

I cant wait to see where this goes I cant stop laughing:D L.M.A.O.

:boxing: i never said street racing was a good thing or that I approve...

People go to outings talk **** do burnouts but that all leads to a track nearest you, doesnt mean Im gonna go to a drive in and have a slow mobile....

thats why some people.. (shhh wont mention any names) might go out "conservitive with thier edelbrock carbs and weeeny cams and leave such an event feeling shall we say SMALL? then go online and bash everyone for wanting some fun... but as far as lining up on the street and drag racing? never... I would not approve or even suggest... but i do know what guys like..

the car aformentioned was never raced on the street BUT it was king of the STREETERS meaning they all hang out on the weekend at various locations talking **** and on sunday they all go to the track and race...EVERYONE improved upon what they had but this guy in perticular was just so fast with seeming so little, and maybe a few to many burgerking burnouts that yes the police was in fact on him so much he had to tear it down...

Kids do that sort of thing, you're 37 years old for cryin' out loud.

You also bump up against the profanity filter on a regular basis, try to find another way to express yourself.

Its funny I watch auto commercials on tv and their tearing the public highways apart :D theres even one with Charly Shean speeding through A house. and movies like two lane black top, american graffiti , hollywood nights, vanishing point, gone in 60 seconds Etc Etc, But we cant talk about them , The GTO, 409, 442, cobra, amx, amc rebel, even the hudson hornet etc etc, became legends because of their street prowess ,and street marketing without any mention of their track records but Ive seen many threads dumped and members scolded because we old timers post our experiences on the street with these same legendary cars.

I would think we would be given a little lee way but it will probably never come (it is elegal, many people have been killed, it is stupid, childish, and aggravating to most other people) But I always wonder looking at the cars on here putting out well over 500 horse, forced high boost induction, etc, etc. asking questions about more horse power or bigger cams and I know their not running on tracks ( no roll bars, no drag loop, no scatter shield, no trans blanket, etc etc) By the speeds these cars can do they couldn't pass tech to make a pass! unless you keep em above 11 seconds in the quarter with throttle stops or something (then the question is why are they built to go faster???Where do you guys road test your cars when you pull them out of the garage for the first time???? There was one member that said on here he knew an owner of a track that opened it to let him do tune up runs and a couple of passes! But we don't all know owners of tracks! Why build monster engines to put around a rod run, or set parked all day at a show, what do you do push it on a tailor and take it home after! How do you guys know you have a miss at 7500 rpm in any gear unless your a getting on it, Why are you asking about or running high stall converters and steep gears on the street you'll never need em, even the highest rpm engines can idle off a stop sign or drive in normal traffic without stall convertors or steep gears or 14" wide tires ( which by the way are dangerous too in a little sprinkle of rain (they'll hydroplane on tobacco spit) Why do you run wheely bars on the street. Loud exhaust is illegal but Im thinking many of us uncork em once and a while especially at big events!

I don't condone street racing and I don't do it any more, but I do get childish and make mistakes in judgment once in a great while My wife reminds me of this as shes beating me in the shoulder as the rubbers flying off the tires and sticking to my quarter panels ( Not done on the street) I was at a show on private property and was asked to uncork em and nail it by the judges my wife was saying no:nono:. I think every member on here has had a laps of judgment! We're hot rodders Many of us are ex racers and many are now. Its a site set up for hot rods not pretenders and its set up for high performance not grocery getters ( even though it seems to be going in that direction with all the, my car wont start, what do you think my horse power is, my plugs are black whats that mean, Etc, etc.

When we tell some kid how to build an engine to get 400 horse aut of a 305 common sense tells you hes going to pull it out of the garage when its finished and try it right in front of his house!:nono:

Maybe we should warn them or quote the laws on the thread before any answers are given. Ive built cars that scared the owners so bad they wanted the cars detuned (Many of you builders have probably had the same experiance). Those people are rare most all of us like the adrenalin rush of hard acceleration and coming out of an 8000rpm hole shot where the car goes side ways!!! I do! (not on the street:nono::spank:)

Im curious as to how many of us have had lapses of judgment on the streets without elaborating :nono: have any of you ? Just a yes or no, and don't say if it was street race :nono:, a little excessive acceleration :nono:, laying a little rubber:nono: or passing with more speed then was necessary Etc. Maybe a yes and no will pass the monitors as we are not condoning what we did or elaberating on it! Wrong is wrong and a yes or no with a we were wrong seems fine to me!

I answer: Yes

Jester, you and I are almost the same age- I know and you know what used to happen- and still happens.

You mentioned several times "lapses in judgement", and if I understand the phrase, I believe that's something that one would NOT want to repeat, as in, after giving it a second thought it wasn't such a hot idea after all. So a lapse of judgement doesn't justify reliving on the forum all our screw-ups/near misses/scrapes w/LE/et cetera. And you yourself list quite a few good reasons for not doing it, so I wonder why not being able to talk about it bothers you in the first place? I mean, that is such a tiny part of what this hobby/vocation is all about that I would think it wouldn't be missed.

In any event, the direction this site took a LONG time ago was that street racing will not be talked about in depth. Period. No exceptions. Same thing w/profanity. And the decision was also made to allow pretty much any automotive-type question: new car, old car, high tech or grass roots. That's just the way it is. And it has worked well that way.

But, there are some hot rod-type sites that will NOT let anyone ask questions like "why won't my '02 F100 start up?". Those same sites will allow talking openly about street racing, using any type of language.

And that's the beauty of it all- there is more than one channel to watch.

BTW, did you know the Fabulous Hudson Hornets often won because they went through fewer tires and used less fuel? So they were able to beat faster cars by pitting less.;)

:confused:Cobalt: yes I do know about less pits! There's a 92 year old friend of mine in the area his names Charley he worked for Hudson during their hay day! He owns 4 Hudson hornets That he bought new ( they are immaculate) of various years He and his wife still drive one or the others to shows every summer ! I set and listen to the same stories every year about the glory days Ive heard it all! He used to do the the designing, carving , wood molds, making casts and finishing! Its amazing to watch him at his age still do it in his museum of a garage ,He uses the old tools of the trade from the by gone era. He is an artist not just a machinist or craftsman! He enters his cars in muscle car class Opens the hood and the engines are spotless and the 2 white faced hornets on the air cleaners just jump out at you! He never wins a trophy because the judges don't think factory muscle started before the 60s! Old Charley grumbles that the judges don't know what their doing and his little wife smiles and they leave, till the next time! When old Charley is gone Ill miss him and part of the trade will have passed away with him like black smiths who used to set up our straight axles its a dyeing trade!

I was also just asking for a yes or no, on my question no elaborating or bragging or reliving no going into depth no glorifying I take your point on more channels to watch I have never posted on any but this one, and never posted about my street racing if any, But I did make a mistake on here when I posted about road testing a Harley1/4 mile bike on the street and was promptly dumped and scolded, and another time talking about the Seaton Shaker being brought out of the shop onto the streets of Detroit but was quickly put in my place and dumped! I don't remember ever posting about drag racing on the street except for coming to another members defense Because he was our age talking about the early days and I saw no offense in what he said ! but I didn't know the rules then I do now! I even tried to read the rules then and never found it but I must have looked at not all the rules just the site rules I missed it somewhere:confused: If my question for a simple yes or no offends people ask some monitor to dump my post , but keep the thread starters question and your answer on! Its a good question and I took it off track!!!!:spank: And yes a lapse of judgment ment just that if I thought it over I wouldn't do it again!!!!!!!!

It is tough, but "when in Rome..." and all that. It's what we agreed to when we signed up, and I don't think it'll be changed. My first car was a welded diff '55 Chevy post w/a 283 3-speed, so you can imagine the tales. But those tales sounding enticing or "cool" to some impressionable young guy w/a hot car and a brand new license just is not worth the risk IMHO.

I raced at Detroit drag way 50 ford flat head with hilborn While in high school with a 57 chevy rear welded spiders and 4.11 a trans adapter and a 4 speed hydro stick my slicks were Firestone recaps It was great! Best time was high twelves the little 283s revved high and ate me up! I later added Ardun heads! didnt run much faster but man it looked impresive !! LOL

I lost many friends to street racing More probably then most on here the Detroit streets were full of sleepers egging young people to their deaths for a few bucks they don't show that in movies!! once in a great while the police & city of Riverview would block off a street (king road) and let the streetcars fool around with supervision Back then King was as famous as Woodward ! We had a pro stock 1/4 miler here at a show try the burn out contest but even with the concrete wet the slicks gummed up grabbed and jumped the wheel chocks (could have killed someone) Burn out contests just don't make sense to me one day someone will be killed and well see it on the news!!!! I know how impressionable kids are Ive got 4 boys and they all have fast cars or bikes! I worry about em they got the speed part from me but didn't like my trade when my boys were young I took em to every rod run ,drag event, car club meetings, nationals, boat races, even when I pit crewed they were go for's in the pits!! but now they only want speed:drunk::( now my girls like little 4 door 4 cylinders :D I bought an 82 amc eagle sport coupe for my youngest girl and was going to put in a 383 Chrysler engine and torqueflite with a straight axle and she hates it :pain:so its been setting in my yard for 6 years LOL one day Ill post it in the classifieds on our site and Give some young rodder a chance at it! LOL

On this thread, the hears are a very good all around head, very good for the street, great low and midrange and pretty fair higher Rpm range so not total track worthy but really good for steet racing, haha, all about the torque when pullin away. That is if someone was to steet race, a bit.:D

you guys have very good stories to tell from the past, like reading them, we should start a new thread titled, { tell me your hot rod story} ..lol
Start a thread : ask us old guys about pit story's or race story's ( not street:nono:) or things that could not be bought and we had to make like ladder bars and then manufacturers stole our designs because we weren't smart enough to patent them! I new a guy ran a bottle of oxygen to his air cleaner at Detroit Dragway and part way down the 1/4 opened the regulator and was fast as hell but there was a big bang he blew the carb through the hood, and the air cleaner was still attached to it he melted all his pistons! and part of the intake LoL :drunk::D Or flywheels coming through the floor of cars, setting your a s s down on a seat fastened directly to a hot rear end going 160 miles an hr or faster in a sling shot! We all have story's!!! Like being sponsored by crane cams but running a general kinetics cam or sponsored by Mallory but running Packard gold strand wires and a Vortec magneto LOL and Mobil oil but running wolfs head! They didn't care! They didnt pay you to run their stuff if their name was on your car and you won they would give you money the spectators didn't know!!!LOL Let alone contingency money just for having a co. logo sticker on your car!!! LOL:mwink: Good night its late and I had fun remembering that:mwink:
