I have a '94 351 Windsor that will mount to a '67 289 bellhousing with a T-5 trans. What purpose does the 1/16" engine to bellhousing separator plate serve in this assembly?

Basically just keeps dirt and road debris out of the bellhousing, but it does have some bearing on the starter location in relation to the flywheel ring gear teeth, if I remember correctly the starter fits up against the spacer and the bolts go through the spacer/dust shield and into the bellhousing.

Mainly it is there to support the starter. If you leave it out EVENTUALLY your bell housing will break since alone the bell housing is not strong enough to support the starter.
