I am going to be painting my 73 nova sooner or later and as the subject says, I am wondering what to put under the vinyl top.

Currently the roof has some light surface rust (originally a non-vinyl top car.) I will sand out rust, prep with metal cleaner (the "blue stuff" from PPG), and prime with metal etching primer.

The car itself will be painted with lacquer. Should I brush paint on something thick like Rustoleum on the roof, or just shoot the roof like the rest of the body.

I guess I just want to "cheat" a little by not spraying the roof and of course I'm also concerned about any rust forming under the top. I was also told "never brush paint under a vinyl top." Don't know if this is an old wife's tale or not....

Thanks in advance for your help/ ideas.

If you use a good sealer on the car you can just put the top on over that. The sealer will protect against rust, primer won't. Primer is porus, it will absorb moisture and rust will for. Sealer will seal all moisture out.
