no? sorry! anyway: $9000 paint/glass/stripe job. the paint shop said they cut out some rust where the vinyl top moulding attached and filled it with fiberglass, but they didn't do any metal replacement. ( i guess they knew they would BANKRUPT ME if they did.) kinda like i did with the pinhole rust holes in my floor of my camaro. i all-metaled some glass netting (@ 1/4" squares they use for plaster walls) over the floor after i sanded it and then killed the rust and then put water barrier paint over it.

so now it looks great. i painted the trunk all nice and pretty.

trouble is now i get little rust flakes whenever i drive the car that bounce down i guess from somewhere up in the rear post area. the rust must be one of two things: rust that was cut away and wasnt vacuumed out and accumulated in places and just bounces down onto the trunk, or ...
rust that is still on the inside of the rear pillars that couldnt be reached by Joe Painter that is breaking loose from bumps on the road and then either way...

the flakes landed on my paint, i drove in the rain or washed the car and water got in the trunk, the little flakes rusted thru from the top down, thru my clear coat over the trunk paint and made it look just like i painted over a rusted out POS trunk instead of a properly prepped one (you can see the trunk before and after in my journal if you want to see if i'm blowing hot air), but i dont have any pictures of it. i repainted it after i used this rust killer called OsFo, the osfo didn't have enough warm weather to dry right i guess, so now it's kindof milkly looking and looks like crap. i have to re paint the trunk again.

well the question is this, how do i stop the little rust flakes from bouncing down onto the trunk before i paint it? you cant seem to keep water out of these cars either. i am thinking of getting that home-use spray-can foam insulation and spraying some as high up there by the sides of the rear windshield as i can reach, then after it dries, spraying it with rubberized undercoating. then repainting the trunk with splatter paint/CC

is there anything else i can do that doesnt sound so HOKEY? :(
i'm thinking maybe just blast the whole can of undercoating up there first.

I bet the water is coming in around the rear window... The channel around these windows are known for rusting through.

About the flakes, spray some trunk paint or undercpating up the rear post area 1st, let it dry to seal in the flakes, clean up your floor and paint it. I have the same problem with my Pontiac.

no, had all the glass removed when it was painted with new seal. i crawled inside yesterday with a flashlight and saw there isnt anything rust wise under there. i sprayed with marhyde rust converter anyway, just a couple small spots. i will spray undercoating only. the rust must be coming from somewhere else, maybe up inside the deck lid or somewhere around the hinges. i cant tell where, it just peeses me off. i have to pull my tail light housings out again to repaint the bottom of the trunk. it cleaned up nice enough with a sponge to show it to a buyer yesterday tho so the emergency is over.

i have new weatherstripping around the trunk and new marker light gaskets as well. they seem to seal pretty good in the rear, which is why i cant figure out the water thing. the new soft seal gaskets for the front markers are absolute crap tho. way more gap WITH the new gaskets and almost none with NO gaskets.

Put someone in the trunk with a flashlight, start spraying water on the car in the tail lamp area and have your helper watch for leaks, then move the water up and check around the trunklid seal having your helper watch that area, then move the water up around the rear window area and have your helper watch. If no leaks are found this way tape the hose over the roof and allow the water to flow naturally for a few hours- if it is a slow leak it will eventually show up. Don't forget to let your helper out of the trunk. :D
