Am considering purchasing a Bill Mitchell Hardcore Small Block (415 or 427 CID) for my 1964 Corvette, which is used mostly for cruising/daily driver when weather permits. I've read most of the magazine articles which review Bill Mitchell Hardcore engines, and most seem quite favorable.

I would appreciate any feedback from anyone who has (or knows of anyone who has) firsthand experience with any of the Bill Mitchell crate engines. Any input regarding performance vs. advertised, streetability, reliability, etc. would be greatly appreciated.

From what I have seen they are decient motors for the price, considering they are assembeled. On the other hand, I think you could get a engine shop to build you a 421 with AFR heads that would cost about the same, or less and have more hp. The Bill Mitchell motors have aftermarket blocks. This is not bad, except for the fact that they add around $1500 to the price of the motor. I would splay the main caps in a stock 400 block, and build a 421. This would be all that you would need in a street application, unless you plan on running a supercharger with alot of boost on top of it. I would call a company called Revolutionary performance, and see what it would cost to have a 421 built with the AFR 210 or 220cc heads. That motor with a streetable hyd roller cam would make around 550 hp.

I visited not too long ago, Bumbera's Performance here in Houston, and he was rebuilding a Bill Mitchell small block that in his words was "junk". ???

You can build one, or get one from HERE. Don't feel bad about not building one yourself. For the prices from this builder, it is hard to beat. Check his feedback. Mark had a good rep for building nice engines.
