Is the green tape the only type really suitable for auto body painting? Has anyone ever used the blue tape available at the big box stores with any success?

Buy the green tape, the blue tape is not suitable for good auto paint work.

Blue tape is for home painters, and has no place in auto painting.

even some green's don't, so be careful.. I don't touch anything unless it's 3M brand listed for automotive

I've tried the 3M blue painters tape and it went straight to the garbage. It doesn't stick well to other tapes and allows overspray. Now if you were talking the blue plastic 3M fineline, it is the cats pajamas.

No with the Blue,but I just tried 3M's NEW yellow (automotive)
great tape and less$$$ than the green.
Used it to do the 2 tone on my latest and no bleed thru and good crisp lines.

Green or yellow tape it will be.

blue tape is less sticky, we use it on fresh industrial paint jobs when we do 2 tone paint. Don't recommend it for auto applications
