I am getting closer to getting my 49 Chevy ready for final paint, just in the assembly stages right now. It has been stripped, new metal added, SPI epoxy primed and some assembly and jamming has also been started. I am at a spot in the back of the car (under trunk lid) that I need to apply filler to. This car was a custom done some years ago, and this area had the bumper and rear splash apron removed. Metal was added and then it was shaped with filler for a smooth look. I need to replace this filler which had areas up to 3/8" thick for shaping.
The problem I am having is that this area, (if you look down at it from above the trunk) has the shape of a flattened out S, or like the old mustaches men used to wear in the early 1900's. (Best description I can come up with at the moment and no digital). I am trying to figure out how to apply filler in this shape and how to go about shaping it as well. The long flat areas on the car are not a problem, but how do you shape a multiple radius that has flat edges (body lines)? I am thinking of using a wide spreader to follow the body lines (edges) and fill the low areas in between. If that would work, how do I shape such an area and achieve an acceptable paint surface finish? What types of sanding tools could be used or improvised to follow this shape?
Thanks for the help in advance
