I'm making plans to to build either a 289 or a 302 with a manual tranny for my 1962 comet. The 170 six just isn't blowing my skirt up. My question is, which engine would I get the most out of for the least amount of money? Which would be a better ending product? Ideas for a build? Originality is out the window so im open to all suggestions. Just a high-school student wanting to hotrod out his Sunday cruiser. Thanks for your time.

302,165 AFRs,small roller hydraulic cam,650 double pumper,headers. The engine is small so gear and transmission ratios will come into affect.
What is the purpose of the car? street and strip?peppy accelleration with no intent?4 speed or 5 speed?

maybe just do a great job on a stock 271 horse clone,but use a roller hydraulic cam.The 4 speed in an old car is fun as is.
Horse power is easy to get now days,just has a cost,,,

The most bang for the buck might be to find a late model mustang 5.0 HO , 87 and later. Around here you can find one for $ 500 with the wiring, computer and trans.sometimes get the whole car and use more parts, sell off parts you don't need. Those swaps have been covered in the Mustang magazines, and on the falcoln-fairlane forums.

Are you looking for fuel injected or a carb? I would look at a modern 5.0L. You can take advantage of the hydraulic roller cam. If you are starting from scratch, you should also consider a stroker or even a 351w. Here is a healthy daily "motor":
302 (9.5-10:1?)
220/226 @ .050" 525/535-112'
AFR-165 (or 185's with custom pistons)
Edelbrock air gap intake
600 cfm carb

This would work well with 3.25-3.50:1 gears.

Speed costs money,how fast do you want to go? First consideration is your budget,to get the best answers how much can you spend is what we need to know to help you get the most bang for your buck.

I'm doing a late model 5.0 in my 65 Ranchero.
Carbed with a Ford Motorsports cam.

Not quite ready for fuel injection yet---maybe later.

Right now trying to work out an exhaust system using mustang manifolds.
Not a lot of rom in the Falcon--or your Comet and the Mustang parts do not always work out. Now having interferance issues with the exhaust pipe and the bracket needed for the clutch bell crank.

But--I'm experimenting.

Hope to set in the car within a couple of weeks to accuratley check clearances.

Are you using 5.0L exhaust manifolds (or older mustang manifolds)? If you having issues with the bell crank, you may consider a cable setup. I had an issue as well. I used the cable setup from moderndriveline.com

Trying to use 65ish Mustang manifolds-----they are bumping into the
bellcrank bracket on the driver side.
Also using the Mustang exhaust pipes----Have to cut the "H" out and move it as it is interfering with the trans mount (BW T-10)

Engine and trans is on a homemade engine run-in stand, so it is a bit easier to work on it at this point.

Gonna set it in the car next weekend and check for additional issues.

If I cannot get the Mustang exhaust to work out correctly, I will change it to (What the car ORIGINALLY had) the High Performance 289 manifolds..

Trying to use the Mustang manifolds to save a bit of cash.
Regular Falcon manifolds might interfere with the lower crosmember brace
that I intend to install.

Trying to avoid any type of header----never had good luck with them----always snugging bolts up or tightening the collectors-------besides, there is only enough room for a gnat to crawl between the stock manifolds and the shock towers.

My lil Ranchero has been in the family since it was new, so I really have no desire to make any body modifications.

A 302 with a mild cam (like a Comp Dual Energy, around 218 degrees @ .050 intake side) and Performer, a 600 CFM carb, good ignition (Ford makes some good ones, aftermarket is also good), and you will have a snappy and fun engine that is near bullet proof. A 302 kept under 6,000 RPM will last a LONG time. Your description of what you want calls for an engine like this. Enhance low-end and mid-range power. It will be much more responsive and not eat you out of house and home. A "hot" motor (high revver) is fun under the right conditions. These are not those. Keep the rear gears in the low 3s and everything will be happy.

SB Fords now have almost as many options to increase performance as the proverbial belly button Chevy though you do have to look harder when you go out of the ordinary. The only thing that I would insist on to myself is to start with a roller engine, with the '87's and later being the way there ( the '86 will work as well, but have very poor heads). Mine is a '99 manufacture block with GT40P heads, retrofitted with a Ford letter camshaft with the proper valve hardware and roller rockers, Performer RPM intake and 1405 carb along with a full MSD ignition. Not a screamer, but in a 2300 pound car will run very nicely up to 6000+/- rpm and a lot faster then I like to drive any longer. Of course, if money is no object, then the fancy aluminum heads, a different more radical camshaft, stroker crank (327/331 works well for longevity vs the 347/352). Or then a 351W starts out where the 302 really can't get to and with the right combination of parts can go well into the 427 cid and beyond range - but at REALLY big bucks to get there

ford info

When I put the small block ford into my 83 ranger mini truck I used Maverick V8 motor mounts and exhaust manifolds. I made my own frame brackets. I don't know how they compare with other factory manifolds, I also used 5.0 factory 4 barrel manifold and the 5.0 holly ..
