The difference can cost you bragging rights or that $10K purse.
I would suggest to anyone getting into this or that doesn't work in my industry full time, to align yourself with a mentor. Ask questions, do your research, but in the end go with the receipe that the mentor suggest. Remember they have been there.
Magazines are wonderful informational pieces, but just because it is printed doesn't mean it really happened. . . didn't they spot elvis again in South America. . .you get my drift.
Component selection. The newest set of heads by a mfg, and a big carb may work for that drag engine that will turn 7500 rpm, but if you have a 70's Nova with a 350; a tight budget, and what you want to do is pin your buddy in the seat, there are other things that can be bought to do that. Don't get caught up in the biggest head, biggest cam, biggest carb or you will have the biggest disappointment of performance for what you spent.
Machine Work. Critical. The best deal on machine work may not be the best investement. If you spend $1500 for a rotating assembly, don't go try to find the cheapest guy to bore/hone/ and the rest. Reason, because his overlooking a .001" here or there can turn your rotating kit into a $100 worth of junk.
Assembly. By all means be a part of this, but have someone around that has done it before that is a good teacher and listen. Who knows you may be the next Grumpy.
All of this is just food for thought. I hate to see people guided the wrong way. Thanks again for having the HP bug.
