Would a cooling fan fault caused by the ac pump be a short?

My car will not keep a battery, it holds a steady 11.8 and charges at 12.4, i know its a wee bit low but it seems fine? what can i do? my alternator is charging.

In the steering coloumn if it is not all the way up there is no ign power but when it is returned to the top position it works, what would cause that?

Where is the back up light sensor?

Sounds like you have wires pinched or cut in the column. That may be why your battery keeps going dead but the alternator should charge at 13+ volts...not 12.4 V. The column cover will come off and the wires will pull free...look for crushed or cut wires and solder them together and tape them up.

If your alternator is only putting out 11.something, you have a bad diode. You can either get a new diode pack (about $15 bucks) and open up the alternator and install it, or replace the alternator.

The loss of ignition power when the column is adjusted , not knowing what year caddie this is, you may have either a solid harness that has a bad connection or cut at the steering wheel joint (adjustable part) or a movable contact with "Fingers" that are dirty, malformed or bent out of shape..

In either case you need to pull the wheel and go to the adjustable part of the column and look for cuts and/or frayed wires or bad plugs.

On the AC pump. I think a Fan code (a malfunction in the fan circuit ) will defeat power to the AC thermo fuse (AC clutch) To keep the AC from engaging and contributing to an overheat condition.

Does the Cooling fan actually work?

If not you really need to fix that first...(you could overheat and burn up the engine) then clear the code and try it again. Check the Thermo Fuse too on the compressor harness.

ok

The fans work fine, not even even close to a overheat.

The ac pumps just kicks in clicks stalls movement and drops my engien idle then clicks again and spins.

As for the alternator, My bad it charges 14.4-6 and holds a constant 11.7-8 when not charging.

Sounds like the AC slightly low on refrig fluid...The clutch sounds like it is cutting in maybe the computer is kicking it back out from low refer charge.

On the Altenator, 11.78 sounds like it's trying to support a big load...14.4 is normal under charge....
