If U have an engine that has had an aftermarket cam installed in it,is there anyway U can tell if the cam had been advanced or retarded when it was installed without tearing the front of the motor apart?

I don`t think there`s a real way to tell unless you install a degree wheel and pop the valve cover and get the cam specs on a card so you can check the degree`s but you`ll still need to know where the piston is in it`s rotation to know.

you can also do it off the valve stem with a degreewheel that is referenced to your crankshaft keyway (your balancer's timing mark may have moved If it is a good balancer and you're sure it hasn't shifted you can use the timing mark as a reference.), the only thing you'll need to remove is your accessories and your valve covers. This is assuming the opening/closing ramps are symmetric or very near to it.
