The wife and I are looking at buying another house.

It already has a 24 by 26 ( wide ) garage.
I want a bigger space and am wondering how a guy would make it wider? The trusses run front to back.

I could add onto one side easily enough but how do you extend a roof?

The garage is less than a year old so I would hate to have to rip off the roof in order to extend it and then have to re-roof it.

Any ideas?

Extending the roof isn't a big deal. If the framing is trusses, order more trusses, if not, just create your new roof trusses.
Extending the roof is just extending the foundation, framing, the walls, and scabbing the roof. The new roof can be inter-leaved with the old.

CET...you will have to rip off part of the roof in order to make it look right. The sheeting on a roof is staggered. I have seen many add on that they just tie in alongside. When they do it is a definate ridge that prominately shows where the roof was addad on. Also getting a color match on the shingles will be tough as they really need to have the same batch number to match. Just like carpet. If you are going to add to the side plan on replacing the complete front roofing shingles or at least on the side that everyone will see. A rear yard that is not seen can have a somewhat mismatch. Also I would go back two trusses on the existing garage and tie in all of your sheeting boards. This way it will not only tie it in stronger it will eliminate the defined ridge of an add on. Just a suggestion, but trust me you will be happioer in the long run and will only cost a couple of hundred more for the extra shingles.
