Yes, even the later 8.6 gears will work. Also the 8.5 front axle in the late '70s and early '80s 4X4 trucks use the same gears.
The Impala Caprice rear ends used a reluctor ring on the pinion shaft. The pinion shaft in these rear ends were different from others. It's not a problem if you are using an Impala Caprice gear in another rear end, but if you are using other gears in an Impala Caprice rear end you will not be able to use the ring and the speedometer and anti lock brakes will not work.
There are two ring gear carriers series for the 8.5 axle. One for one 2.56 and numerically lower gear ratios, and one for 2.73 and numerically higher, so you have to keep that in mind if swapping gears between different housings and carriers.
