I have a 1973 pontiac ventura that is about 70% finished. One of the main things giving me problems is wiring my charging system. When I got the car it was mostly in parts. The engine is brand new, as well as the rear end, tranny, interior, and all the glass. The problem with the wiring is that the car came with points and a external voltage regulator, but has been switched over to HEI with an internally regulated alternator. I have obtained wiring diagrams for the original way it was wired and a diagram on how to wire it with HEI and the alternator it has now. The problem is how to combine the two. I have it running and I think it is running on the battery not the alternator. I am confused by the wiring going to the horn relay, fusible links( or lack of ), and which wires go from the alt. to the starter, etc. Any help would greatly appreciated. Thanks

hei simply connects to switched full 12v source

plug it into the ign port on the fuse panel

the charging system will be simple

just connect all the bigger red wires to the charging post on the alt and loop a short length one from the spade conector on the side f the alt to the charging post

the small wire on the other spade on the side of the alt goes to the dash light or guage(white wire on external regulator wiring harness plug

blue wire do away with- no longer needed

red wire to alt charging post or to battery


done

simple

all the red wires need to be full hot at all times

surprised a 73 would not habd internally regulated alt on it

73-up were all internally regulated that ive ever seen
even the trucks, and was the first year for this system.,


so thats odd,,

Thanks for the help! as soon as I get out to the garage I will try your suggestions. I,m surprised you haven,t heard of a 73 gm with an external voltage regulator, everywhere I go they say it,s pretty common. At any rate you have been helpful and i sure appreciate it.
