I just replaced my carburator with an original one and it turns on and all but the motor doesnt stay on with out me pressing on the gas. I have a 1980 gmc short bed pick up

Not enough information..........2bbl, 4bbl...........is it flooding, just dying....?

Might be something as simple as turning the idle up, adjusting the mixture screws etc.................... :confused:

Was the old carb doing the same thing? Might be a timing or ignition problem.

its a 2 bbl. the old carb just came apart and wasnt shutting off. how would i adjust the mixture and vacuum lines inlets are a little different from the old carb

Chances are, if the vacuum fittings were different...you may have a vacuum leak somewhere.

To adjust the idle mixture...there are 2 screws in the front near the bottom. Turn them in until it stumbles and then out until it stumbles....turn it in 1/4 turn.
