what shoud I do, rebuild or new crate motor? I've got at least one dead cylinder and maybe two more, probably just one though judging by the spark plugs. One of the valves is dumping gas into the exhaust too(dead cylinder). I'm thinking about bailing on my trans am and just selling it for whatever. I bought it for 2200 on the car, I've already put in probably 800 into it, and now I'm looking at 1500 plus for a new crate. I'm nearly at the end of my rope. What would you do if you had a 79 Trans Am that's been rednecked together for years and has the best rattle can paint job ever? Bail or dump more money into it?

If its something you're passionate about, keep it and spend the money. If not, sell it to a 15-year old or a college kid who needs a project. That kind of car is still attractive since some people like me have a couple 350s laying around ready to drop in a cheap project.

If you want the car, its money well spent. If you're going to sell it, you won't get a good return on your engine investment.

If you decide to fix the engine, I suggest yanking it out and having it rebuilt. Should cost under $1000 for the engine even with specific pistons and cam. You can also often exchange your core for an already rebuilt 350 to minimize downtime. Double check with people to make sure the machine shop is a good one. I've seen some really scary stuff get churned out of budget machine shops.

If you only install a new motor, you know the trans will more than likely take a dump shortly after. If it's rough like you say, the cost of a motor/trans re-do will exceed the value of the car. If it was a nice original car in good shape, the NADA low retail on it would be around $7,000. Take a look on ebay and see what they are selling for and in what shape. That might help you make a decision.

you're absolutly right, that tranny will take a dump right after, it's science. I guess it's peddle mania time for me. In a few weeks, i'll be like ya, it's 15 speed, Got it up to 35 miles power once. Thanks for help guys I really appreciate the advice.
