I would like to re-power my 95 1 ton Suburban 454 with a high torque/high horsepower BB that can live on 87 octane (I get it free). Are there any crate motors that can achieve that and pass CA smog?

Summit has a GM Performance Parts crate motor that should fill your requirements nicely.

This one is an HO with forged steel crank, top of the line rods, 425 horsepower at 5250 rpm and 500 ft./lbs. of torque at 3250 rpm and 8.75:1 compression so it should run on 87 octane. $5000 seems OK for what they give you.

Jegs offers what appears to be the same thing for a little less money @ $4900.

Thanks for the suggestion. I called Summit's Tech line and they said the engine will not meet CA emissions or run very well on 87 Octane.

I am thinking that I may give the engine a bit of an overhaul and put on some Edelbrock (Ca emmissions approved) heads, EFI and exhaust.
