I am serving in Afghanistan and will be coming home in a few months to start the process of building up my 1955 Ford Customline. I want to chop the top about 3 1/2 inches. I've never chopped a top before and plan to hire a good bodyshop to do it for me. Can anyone tell me a general, rough, ball park estimate of how much I need to budget for the chop? Also, does anyone know of a reputable shop anywhere in North or South Carolina?

It will take approx 1 week to do a difficult chop.
I dont know what the body shop rates are in your area.... lets assume $45.00 * 40 hrs = $1800.00.......Don

When you get home, (PS Thanks for being there) post here again. I have a shop in Gaffney SC that can do the job. So far, we have done a 53 Chev, 3 VW's, a 49 Chev (like chopping an egg) a 53 Chev truck, a 52 Chev wagon(See my photo album)
Like I said, let me know when you are home

I'm workin' on a 55 Customline too. Don't know as I'd chop the top though, A lot of good money that could be spent on other things. ( Like a complete channel ) Ha! I'm playin like mine is a Fairlane because the trim is a lot easier to come by. There are some Australian options that are interesting as they use the same body style clear up to ( I think ) 59. Makes for a 12 volt radio and clock and guages and such. Direct swap. Canada has some different stuff too. I think maybe there are a lot more parts available there. I've bought parts from coast to coast and Australia to Canada and everywhere in between. Makes me mad when you see 10 times as many Chevy parts out there. Birdhaven at Colfax Iowa has most of what you need if you can't find used. Mercury has some pretty fancy interior chrome. I've used a mix of 55 De Soto and Rambler trim. Of course the car goes Candy Apple Red outside and a Red interior with Route 66 inserts. Carpet was supposed to be Red until I found a set of Black moulded still in the box. Of course a 390 / C6. Stock mufflers and tailpipes. I like to hear the music now instead of the rumble I used to. Cops like it better too. Well, here I go rattling on again so I guess I better stop. Good luck with your 55. I have a web address for some good shots of a frame off.......Too old to be doin' this......

Can I jump in here for a couple of questions off the subject please....Also working on a 55 customline 4 door for father n law. He wants the six taken out and an 8 put in. He does have a 302...but this motor is way to crazy to run in this car. He wants me to convert it over to 12v also...
Sorry about jumping in here...just needed to get some answers to these questions so I can fill him in..

Hi there...you really should start your own thread rather than Hi-Jack one like you just did. But did you look and see??? This thread is 5 years old. Also...this is the Body forum....please post your questions in the appropiate forums. Your question belongs either in the Hotrodding Tech forum or the Engine forum.

I seen where this thread was dealing with the exact car I am working with...

And did you notice what I said at the end of the post or reply??? Maybe I should look for another board to ask questions...
Would you like me to delete my reply???????

I was merely trying to give you a helping hand. The thread may be about the exact car but.........there is a world of difference between chopping a top and choosing a engine. The last post in this thread before you posted was 5 years ago. It is always best to start your own thread in the appropiate forum. Welcome to Hotrodders....you will get the hang of it before long. :)
