I have a 72 Chevelle that leaks into my trunk from the outside windshield chrome molding. Is there a wat to take the molding off without ruining the chrome. I know there are clips that hold the molding in place. When I do take the molding off how do I stop the leak? Por-15 or weatherstripping?

First off its not chrome, its just polished aluminum, you cant ruin it, if you scuff it up a little polish and a small buffing wheel on a dremil will buff it out.

Secondly a screwdriver works fine, just slide the clips off the stud and your molding will fall right off.

Third, if the water id leaking into the trunk there is probably a rust hole that will need to be patched. The coorect way is of course steel and welding. The quickie cheap way is fill it with a filler like por-15's thick filler or your everday body filler.

or fiberglass it, which isnt really right way, but at leats you know fiberglass patch wont rust there anymore

You can buy a mldg tool from cdn tire. They are cheap and will work the best. There shaped like an arrow and thin.GM are famous for rusted out pinch welds. The window has to come out to fix it right. If there's is a hole, welding a patch is most permanent. Fiberglass and steel make a very poor bond and will not work well.A cheap way out is to sandblast with a little blaster and fill with windshield urathene.

More than likley if the car is in good shape the butle tape that holds your glass in place is dried out.The stainless reveal moldings are not the leak its the window butle not sealing.remove the window and clean all the old tape 3m sells window ribbon kits.

i think its probably the metal under the chrome that rusted out. it all needs to be removed and maybe por 15'd. yes HK you can wreck it if you bend it. also you can break the damned windshield like i did by prying away from the glass instead of sideways w/the tool, as per directions on the arrow shaped tool.. the tool pulls the bottom of the clip out so you can pull up on the chrome (alum or ss) and it comes out of the clip. don't pry up away from the glass with the tool or OOOUCH! :eek:

shoulda also said you can see whats up after you take the moulding off. if you dont you can get in the trunk and 1-see if any water comes in as somebodys squirts your car, 2-see any light holes as somebody shines a drop light outside at night.

Spend a few bucks and get the proper tool to remove the clips. You bend the moulding and you'll be buying new. After you remove the moulding clean everything thoroughly to see how many holes you have. Depending on the damage depends on the repair. Also after the moulding is removed take care to not nick the edge of the glass or it could end up cracking all the way up. If you have quite a few holes you may have to have them welded up. If that is the case then the interior trim will have to be removed also so as to not cause a fire. If you plan on keeping the car then do it right the first time. If you plan on getting rid of the car you can half-*** it with some silicone sealer and sell it on a dry day.

Any way I'm painting an 78 elco for a friend, but when I tore out the vinel top I found lots of rust and wanted to remove the windchield to properly repair the erea. Now that I know there is a windshield removal tool, were to I get one?:confused:

They have the special tool for removing the Stainless from the windows. Feed a piece of string under the windshield, fishing line works best. The string will cut the old seal as you pull it around the glass. Leave a large enough piece so you can reach both ends while standing outside the car. REMOVE that thing carefully. IF THE JOB IS WORTH DOING IT IS WORTH DOING RIGHT. Clean the area and grind to a bright metal. Weld the problem / grind flat / metal prep / seal / primer / paint . You can buy a roll of urethane seal from any glass house. Looks like black rope. Place it in the middle of the outer flange / not the corner. Overlap the bottom points / not side by side. Replace windshield using small chips of wood as a spacers on the bottom. About quarter inch. Press window in and let sit for 3 hrs. Remove wood and install Stainless. Easy weekend job or one day / a friend / a six pack. Almost too easy.
