Depends on the combination and modifications made. There are a couple new ideas out there that allow higher comp ratios to be used with 87 octane, but only a very few people that know how to do it.

It all depends on your combination of parts,but a ballpark figure would be anything over 9-9.5 :1 will need 91 octane,or higher.Camshaft selection has a lot to do with this,years ago I think that Crower had a cam that allowed you to run very high compression ratio's,11-13:1 and still burn regular pump gas,although it didnt become popular and wasnt available long.
