If the connections are not marked, perhaps you have incorrect polarity and/or termination points in you wiring. I believe a fuel gage, for instance, uses the ground for reference, either as full or empty, and the variable resistor in the tank as reference to compare to the ground. If you wired all your grounds to the sensing lines, you might get just the result you did.
