What should I clean my brand new SCAT crank off with before installing?? It has this protective grease **** all over it to prevent rusting so how do I go about cleaning it well enough to get rid of this stuff?

Yeah I use a lott of Scatt crank shaft's in Vw's . In fact I, also use a Generic version of Scatt crank shaft's also . Beleive I was told there Chinneeese

Gotta ask ? We talkin a Forged or cast crank here ? Not impressed with the Cast crank I used at all ? In fact a cast counter weighted crank it Hammerd on the center main !

Not enough too cause a problem But due too other problem's , when I tore motor back apart . Considerable hammering had Gone on ?

This was on a Balance'd Motor . We re- ligned Bored the case . Went with Scatt brand, counter balanced Forged it Runn's great .

But we all know what Scatt mean's in French ? <<< Just not sure how too take it ? >> As in a Piece of Scatt ! >> or It's the Scatt !

Ok answer here . I use walmart .96 cent's a can carb spray << Buy a case of it << Good for every thing ! Even snake bite ! ! And blow out re peatedly with compressed air . << Should be filterd ! <<, Meaning Dont use Jethro's air comp. with no Filter . Blowin Rust particles, old hose debri etc.
You definately wanna pull out any Lil allen screw pluggs and clean out all oil hole's . Crank shaft's I get not Uncommon too find machine shaving's in the oil port holes .
Use Flash light too look down all oil holes . A thorough cleaning is needed . Along with a thorough inspection . Then finish off with can of Spray parts Cleaner . << Dont leave any residue .

Who Said wipe it off with a Ragg . << Made me flinch ! No Ragg's! <<, get YELLED AT , for using a ragg ! Even a lint free ragg ! No raggs period on any internal parts and or inside the motor !!!
Wipe it off with your finger ! Then wipe finger off on your t- shirt ! Or lint free ragg !

When I say lett me see it ? << Mean's hand it too me so I can feel it with my fingers ! Fingers can detect , scratches, deformities, like 10,000 smaller than the Eye , can see ! <<, remember this Olds Machinist Trick , or Know How .

Lett me see it ! <<< Mr. Scatty Boo Hold's crank up ! See it ?

Guy ! Just aggravate's, the Scatt out of me !

P.S. Almost forgot ! Use a couple of end wrenches too play a tune on your Crank shaft webb's . <<, Good Tune ! Good Crank ! Flatt tune ??/ Fractured crank ! <<, Means crank should have a Ringing or Intoneation too it . A cracked crank will sound >> Tank ! Tank ! when lightly tapped with a wrench ! Crank needs too be suspended , on Styrofoam Blocks that came with it in the Box, when playing a tune . << Tiiinnnkkkkkk Tungggggg, Tiiiine . As in, a ringing, tonation ! Ahhh thats what those, Styro foam block's are For ??????

Like brake rotors.
The most important thing in final cleaning is that the part be so clean that a white paper towel gets NO coloration when wiping it with your chosen non-residue solvent. scrub scrub scrub Oil it quickly, it will rust in a few minutes.

It's an internally balanced rotating assembly I bought, I thought that meant it is already balanced on the crankshaft itself, where as if it were externally I would need the 400 flywheel and get it balanced myself. :confused:

Each specific type is balanced with its corresponding component, which are "spec weights". All 400 externally balanced flexplates are the same, period. All neutral balanced 350 plates are the same, period.

Crankshafts are usually listed with a "bobweight" number. This is the "weight" of the pistons, rods, etc. that the crank was designed for.

That does not take into effect the weights of non standard pistons or rods. That is, forged racing pistons for a 350 are much lighter than cast stock pistons for the same 350.

Therefore, each chosen assembly should be "spin balanced" to match the crankshaft weight to the pistons/rods. (the weight is adjusted +- on the crankshaft.) :D
