Hey,
I want to build a custom center console..... what is the best wayt o do this.. i was thinking of getting some plywood or particale board or somethign and buildign it.. after i did that how woudl i cover it... obviousl i m poor and am not gonna tkae this to an uphoulstery place so how can i make it look good myslef? Do i use foam between teh wood adn whatever fabric i get?

what type of fabric tdo i get?

Jordan,

sounds like you're on the right track. It just depends on what you want and how you want it to look. Plywood is a good choice of material because it is easy to work with and doesn't weigh that much. It won't be that hard to build a basic shape to whatever you want. As far as what kind of covering material you could use just about anything. Myself i think i would use a vinyl/fake leather kind of thing because then you don't have to worry about spills. Also, you can pick up cheap consoles and similar accessories at auto parts stores (cupholders, etc.). Maybe you could use parts from them and build them into your console to make it look more professional.

You can use plywood, balsa wood coverd in fiberglass, encapsulated foam, and if your going for an eligant look, some exotic woods like cocobolo, or mahogany or just a oak or birch with the right color of stain works great. I make exotic wood dashes and center consols. about the fabric, any will do, just try and find a somewhat thick fabric since this piece will be in a high traffic area.

here's a suggestion. take some cardboard and make your console pattern.cardboard is cheaper than wood. cut and recut until you have the right look.
now you can decide on the wood. if your gonna cover it, i would use 1/2' plywood. particle board is too heavy and not as porous. use your pattern and trace onto the wood. as for fabric or vinyl, i would opt for vinyl. its durable but most important you can clean it easier. you know there will be spills and scuff marks. go to a fabric store and see what they offer. you can also get adhesives there too. if you get stuck or have a problem , email me and i will help you if i can. i do upholstery for a living. good luck
