i have a domestic 4-cyl. engine. how can i use a vacuum gauge to determine the optimum diameter size for it? for example, can i hook up the gauge near the throttle body to see if vacuum goes up or down? it will not be raced at all

Yup, just like you said. If you ever get more than an inch of vaccum you have a restriction upstream.

Intake ducting won't get rid of the "bog"...it just might free up some more top end HP.
