I need to get a set of SBC hugger headers coated. Getting prices from $175.00 local to $140.00 mail order, but I saw where Eastwood is advertising one of their powder coatings called HOT POWDER SILVER HI TEMP rated to 1000 degrees. We have one of their powder coating kits and it works well. Does anyone have experience with this particular product?? I saw in Knowledge Base about www.techlinecoatings.com They claim to have a paint on product good to over 1000 degrees? Anyone used that product?? THANKS... THERESA

Theresa,
The coating from a company such as Jet-Hot or HPC is a thermal barrier coating that requires a lot of surface prep such as media blasting and chemical washing, special ovens and other very expensive tooling. It works in that the heat is not absorbed into the base metal but is shoved out by the exhaust. I very much doubt that a high temperature powder coating will do that in that it is not much more than a HT plastisized paint. I've used Jet-Hot primarily and have had excellant luck. HPC was used once only because I won a 'treatment' at an NSRA event. They both work as advertised though the HPC stuff darkened with age and the Jet-Hot always stayed bright and shiny. I do my intakes as well as it keeps gasoline drizzles from staining.

Just for you comparison, the surface temp of headers can reach 1800 degrees if you're running a little lean and have your foot into it for a while. Heck, my stock manifolds on my stock LT1 glow red at night after a gentle highway run.

1000-degree paint won't hold up.

this guy in Omaha does a header coating thats said to be A #1 Stuff.

http://fcrparts.com/

give him a call toll free on Central time between 10:30 am to 7:00 pm 1-877-215-1800 he is a nice guy (his name is Terry Fritsch) and easy to talk to, and he will take the time to talk to you plus he will awnser all your questions. he talked to me prob a Hour about his thermal coatings.

" When it comes to thermal efficiency coatings, FCR uses the finest in the industry available! Our coating supplier also supplies the United States military, showing proof of quality available. All of our coatings are done in house including oil shedding coatings, anti friction, bearing, heat dissipating, and surface protectant coatings

FCR offers the absolute finest in header coatings available and block heat transfer tremendously. After applying our coatings to headers, they are touchable to the bare hand within a couple of minutes after shut off on the dyno. The reason is simply because they never absorbed the heat and kept it in the inside of your headers bringing your power level up, and keeping your underhood temperatures much cooler than other header coatings."

Talked to Eastwood Tech service today and they explained how to apply this coating. Piece must be totally clean of rust, sand blasted, cleaned with Aectone and preheated to 450 degrees before product is applied.. WOW we are going to give it a try as we have a Eastwood powder coating equipment and done many sucessful parts... THERESA

Bill Hirsch Engine and Exhaust paint?

Over 20 years ago I sandblasted and then brush painted some headers with "Bill Hirsch Auto Parts Co, (Newark New Jersey) Stainless Steel high temperature paint (1200*)".

The car did not get driven much, the paint developed an ugly grey color, but the headers did not rust.
