Hey guys,

Ive got a stock chevy 350 and its been running fine until recently it's been stalling and leaking gas. So my issue is that I crank the engine and it starts with no problem then after about 5 seconds of idle, it stalls and turns off. As it is about to turn off my Edelbrock 1406 carb has gas leaking through the top of the two vents of the carb. One of the many times of trying to keep it alive is that the fuel filter has some black debris as I crank in it. So obviously my gas tank is dirty. So I ended up taking apart my carb from the top and cleaning the needle and seat, as well as all the ports and holes where gas and air enter. I would spray carb cleaner through each hole til it shoots out the other side then get the air compressor and blow it all out. I did this with all the ports. Additionally, I checked my float levels and they are good. After putting everything back together it starts up and then after 5 seconds fuel comes flowing down the two upper vents again. I replaced the fuel filter as well. Could I get any ideas on what to do?

Check your fuel pressure, Edelbrock carbs don't like much more than 5 psi.

It’s either:

- Too much fuel pressure 5 to 6 psi is plenty for the Edelbrock, think to lower side.

- There is debris in or damage to the needle and or seat from debris.

- A float or even both are leaking fuel and in operation are sinking. No matter how much you correct the float adjustment they will sink allowing the needle valve to stay open. Edelbrock gives careful instruction on how to do the float adjustment, it is easy to over-stress the solder joint of the tang to float causing a fuel leak into the float. One of the best things Edelbrock could do for humanity is develop a nitrophyl float for these things but in the mean time track with the instructions.
