I have an 88 cavalier wagon. The rear window defrost stopped working 3 days ago. All my fuses are ok. If I understand correctly. The power comes to the switch, then to a timer, then to the window element. Does anyone know the correct procedure on testing these components and where in the car the timer is located?

If that is the kind of defroster that is a grid of wires running across the glass, look over the grid carefully. Its entirely possible that one or more of those wires, which are super thin, have separated. IF thats the case, then your circuit is broken and the grid wont work. The wires are normally a very dark color, and if you see any spots of light color along those wires, that indicates a break.

The timer should be an integral part of the switch on your dash.
On the glass, itself, you will have two terminals that connect the grid to the wiring harness. Not sure about on GM products but on Fords, most are a bayonette type lug setup. Disconnect the lugs and run a test light between the two terminals, with the switch turned on. At least that will tell you whether you have power to the glass or not.
If you dont get your test light to go on, try grounding the positive wire to a spot on the chassis that will give you ground, that will tell you if you have a hot wire or not.

thanks for your reply. I know on my other car which is a 79 the timer is separate. not sure about this one. wires are intact. i was hoping not to rip the dash apart looking for timer. My lemans was behind glove compartment. corvette is below the console arm rest. don't have a clue where this one is. looks like a trip to the library.

thats the breaks

Sorry that didnt help much.

My Chiltons Big Book doesnt go up that late in years. every thing else I have is for Fords.
